The Greek City States: A Source Book

Political activity and political thinking began in the cities and other states of ancient Greece, and terms such as tyranny, aristocracy, oligarchy, democracy and politics itself are Greek words for concepts first discussed in Greece. Rhodes presents in translation a selection of texts illustrating the formal mechanisms and informal workings of the Greek states in all their variety. From the states described by Homer out of which the classical Greeks believed their states had developed, through the archaic period which saw the rise and fall of tyrants and the gradual broadening of citizen bodies, to the classical period of the fifth and fourth centuries, Rhodes also looks beyond that to the Hellenistic and Roman periods in which the Greeks tried to preserve their way of life in a world of great powers. For this second edition the book has been thoroughly revised and three new chapters added.

received this request on my flickr

I saw this beautiful picture you made in Barcelona 'Purple House' and I want to ask your permission for using it at the front of a booklet (school project) about studying in Spain, that's been made by students and of which I'm the editor. We would very much like it to use your photo in our book, is that ok?

Of course you'll be credited in the book. I can send you the PDF afterwards if you want?

Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you!

Kind Regards,
Farhana Faroque

HER REPLY:

Hello Jennifer,

That's very good to hear, I'll send you the PDF when it's done (which could take a while, but we'll get there

By foreigners, our school is called University of applied sciences. There is always confusion, because here in the Netherlands we call our this High School, but it it's at the same level as universities in the English school system. We call our school 'Hogeschool van Amsterdam' (HvA). I'm a last-grade student 'Communications & Multimedia Design' (our high school studies generally last 4 years) and I help the teacher of this class, Sander Schroevers, to make this book about studying in Spain by e.g. editing text and lay-out. He has quite a unique style (at least I never heard of it before), he often makes a book(let) together with the students in class. Last year I followed the same class, it's called 'Cross-Cultural Business Skills'. And now he's gives these lessons to students 'Commercial Economics'. I'm not part of the class directly, I just kept on helping the teacher because I'm interested in what he does (he's sort of a cross-cultural communication guru).

Nice to know that your husband is also pleased by us using the photo. 8th graders, where exactly are they in the school system? Is that 'High school'? How old are they generally?

Well, thank you for letting us use your photo, it fits real nicely within the schooldesign. You'll see. It has more of the 'sunny/cozy/student' feeling I was looking for. First I just had a photo of tapas, which was also nice, but I like this one better. It's just difficult to find high quality photo's and even more of a challenge to find a person willing to let us use it for free. So thanks.
I shall credit you the way you specified.

Kind regards,
Farhana

wednesday 5 august

today is Gaudi Day. Gaudi – the genius, visionary catalan architect whose works would fit well into the visionary art museum in baltimore, maryland (USA) – the only artist ever to be considered as a possible catholic saint (and it may just happen). barcelona’s favorite son who lived mostly on nuts and lettuce leaves dipped in milk. hated by picasso.

train ride and a one-mile walk partly up hill took us to Park Guell (you know the place if you saw Woody Allen’s movie, “vicky christina barcelona”). it is a fairy tale park full of the multicolored mosaics and fanciful animals, columns and pillars and battlements that gaudi is famous for. it is a UNESCO world heritage site as are many other of his buildings. as you wander the curving colonnades that blend into the landscape different musicians are playing classical music, some on old or traditional stringed instruments. from the upper level of the park it is hot and the entire landscape of barcelona as far as the sea lies before you. to handle the heat we rely on many lemon ice drinks.

then off to perhaps his greatest work……the Sagrada Famlia – he called it the last great christian sanctuary (modesty wan’t a virtue of his) – and it is vast – and it is astonishing to look at as it rises up in a park setting with its with its eighteen spindle shaped towers -- and although started in the early 1900s it is not expected to be completed until 2030.
we visited other Gaudi buildings all of which had you saying “wow” –. all his buildings have that art nouveau luminous quality with glowing tiles and mosaics in shades of greens and blues and the most unlikely, almost comical roof adornments.

when we first arrived in barcelona we couldn’t help but notice that all the tourist oriented shops sold mosaics (even more than in venice) – neal could not figur

time for 2009 to sleep

Things She Did in 2009

January - She rang in the new year with the girls. She broke up with her boyfriend. She watched MSNBC. She ate pepperoni bread. She reminisced. She rolled her eyes. She smiled. She yawned. She trembled. She painted her bedroom. She listened to the Foo Fighters. She worked. She volunteered. She felt at ease.

February - She went on blind dates. She fell asleep watching Beavis & Butthead. She drank the occasional cup of coffee, despite her strong dislike for it. She ate chili. She battled insomnia. She listened. She tried to stay as centered as possible, despite volunteering in a field that made her feel angry, dejected, helpless, and hopeless. She struggled to remind herself of all the things that make it an awesomely anticipatory experience to wake up in the morning instead of a heavy, scary, and pointless one.

March - She did yoga. She cooked. She went to Salem, MA. She bought a cowboy hat. She drank Heineken. She drank Irish Car Bombs. She wore green. She celebrated St. Patrick's Day in Philladelphia. She found usefulness in temporary distractions. She reminded herself that there are good people in the world. She listened to The Smiths. She took photos of her dogs in the snow. She worked steadily. She voiced her disapproval of her mother's innappropriate friendship with a taken man. She burnt her tongue on hot chocolate while walking home from Dunkin Donuts.

April - She hiked with her dog. She ran herself ragged through volunteer work. She took pride in the fact that she was actively part of making the world better. She refused to get caught up in the drudgery of life that causes it to lose its magic. She kept herself afloat, even if it took the smallest, most insignificant thing to make her smile. She read books. She swam in a quarry. She went to the dentist. She had two teeth extracted. She popped vicodin like candy. She watched the hummingbirds feed. She listened to Billy Joel. She hated her job. She dyed Easter eggs. She cleaned. She slept. She didn't sleep. She sat on the porch and watched the deer. She watched SNL videos at work all day.

May - She threw her sister a surprise birthday party. She got shitfaced. She wore sombreros. She ate pistachios. She realized she had been off anti-depressants for a year, and she was okay. She finally started to feel like a real person again. She gained self-assurance. She felt infused with a newfound surge of positivity. She volunteered. She hiked. She almost passed out at work. She attended the annual Pet Expo in Robbinsville. She acquired a BlackBerry. She made bonfires. She made friends. She did yoga. She got frustrated with training new staff only to have them quit after a few weeks, because the working conditions are so intolerable and the boss is crazy.

June - She quit her job of two years. She freed herself from a miserable work environment and people she hated. She finished volunteering, having promised herself she wouldn't do it for more than a year (she lasted 9 months). She went to Bamboozle Fest to see No Doubt perform. She went on vacation. She drank like a fish. She went to the beach. She hula hooped. She got banned from a hotel she'd been returning to every summer for 8 years. She got pissed off. She ate nachos. She danced to Michael Jackson songs.

July - She turned twenty-three years old. She attended a Fourth of July party next door. She started sleeping with her neighbor. She made new friends. She went to the beach. She went to the tiki bar. She went to the movies. She partied nightly. She ate ice cream. She got a parking ticket. She listened to The Eagles. She met unsavory characters. She criticized. She defended herself. She cried. She laughed. She learned. She threatened. She questioned. She avoided. She confronted. She rolled in from next door at 5 AM every morning.

August - She visited family in New York. She went to the beach. Her boyfriend ceased to be her neighbor. She attended a graduation party. She played poker. She drank margaritas. She reconnected with old friends. She went crabbing. She went fishing. She went shopping. She drank root beer flavored vodka.

September - She made a conscious effort not to swear like a trucker when meeting her boyfriend's grandmother. She ate birthday cake. She fought with her sister. She went to Home Depot. She broke up with her boyfriend. She spent as little time at home as possible. She got kicked off her friend's property after telling a pirate joke. She went on a blind date. She ate sushi. She smoked weed.

October - She went to Atlantic City. She started seeing a new love interest. She drank wine with her creepy neighbor. She watched movies. She ate Kobe beef. She cut up her foot during a drunken walk through the woods at night. She spent a lot of time in Central Jersey. She drank Long Island Iced Teas. She felt frustrated. She distracted herself. She got sick.

The Union Building

The Union Building

Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

Summary

An important example of the Moorish style (with Venetian touches), with a profusion of terra-cotta embellishment that enlivens and adds variety to the facade, the Union Building (originally known as the Decker Building) testifies to the interaction between New York and Chicago architects.

Convincingly attributed to John H. Edelmann, mentor and friend to Chicago architect Louis Sullivan, the Decker Building was designed by Edelmann -while employed by New York architect Alfred Zucker. Edelmann's most significant extant work, the building, located on Union Square West and built in 1892-93, originally housed the Decker Piano Company, one of many firms devoted to artistic enterprises that were once centered around the square.

The Development of Union Square

The commissioners Map of 1807-11, which first laid out the grid plan of Manhattan above Houston Street, allowed for certain existing thoroughfares to retain their original configuration. Bloomingdale Road (now Broadway), and the Bowery intersected at 15th Street. The acute angle formed by this "union" was set aside by the Commissioners and named Union Place. Initially Union Place extended from 10th to 17th Streets, on land owned by the Manhattan Bank:

It then presented to the eye of the tourist and pedestrian a shapeless and ill-looking collection of lots, where garden sauce flourished — devoid of symmetry, and around which were reared a miserable group of shanties.

In 1815, the state legislature reduced the size of Union Place by making 14th Street its southern boundary. As the city expanded northward and land use intensified, the need for open spaces became apparent. A report drafted by the street committee in 1831 states the need for public squares "for purposes of military, and civic parades, and festivities, and ... to serve as ventilators to a densely populated city,"

Designated a public space in 1832 at the urging of local residents, additional land was acquired so that the area could be regularized. Graded, paved, and fenced, Union Place was finally opened to the public in July, 1839. Throughout much of its history, the square has been used fcr public gatherings, political rallies, and demonstrations.

By the 1850s, Union Square (as it came to be known) was completely surrounded by buildings, including some of the city's most splendid mansions; but, "already by 1860, the dramatic march of commerce had begun."

Theaters, hotels, and luxury retailers predominated in the 1870s-5 By the 189 0s, the vestiges of the fashionable residential area, as well as the elegant stores and theaters, had been supplanted on Union Square by taller buildings that catered to the needs of publishers and manufacturers who had moved uptown.

The Decker Building was commissioned by John Jacob Decker, then head of Decker Brothers Piano Company, to occupy the lot that he had leased from its owners.

Adjacent to architect Bruce Price's Bank of the Metropolis, the Decker Building is prominently situated on Union Square West, considered the most desirable side of the square "probably because for all practical purposes it really was Broadway.

By mid-century, piano-fortes had become increasingly popular, and, along with other musical instruments, an important source of manufacturing jobs for New York city.

Like many other businesses concerned with the arts and requiring skilled craftsmen, a number of pianc-makers were situated near and around the square. Decker Brothers appears to have been established by John J. Decker in 1856 at 149 Baxter Street, In May 1863, the firm (which now included David Decker) had relocated to Varick Street.

As of May 1, 187 0, the Decker Brothers showrooms were located at 33 Union Square West and at 322 West 35th Street; the factory's address was on West 35th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. The firm (apparently taken over by William F. Decker by Kay 1, 1896), remained at 33 Union Square West until 1913.

According to Trow's Directory, the firm was in liquidation in the year ending May 1, 1902, and every year thereafter (with the exception of the year ending Hay 1, 1903) until 1913, after which it is no longer listed.

John H. Edelmann (1852-1900)

Writing about John H. Edelmann to his brother Albert from Paris in 1874, Louis Sullivan observed: "You can make up your mind that my reputation as an architect will always be inferior to his."

Even when his assessment of Edelmann's architecture had changed, a half century later, Sullivan wrote:

And be this said here and now: The passing years have isolated and revealed John Edelmann, as unique in personality among fine and brilliant minds. Be assured he will not turn in his grave, unless in bliss, should he hear it said that he was the benefactor and Louis the parasite and profiteer.

And yet, until recently, surprisingly little had been pieced together about Edelmann's career. He

Pullips Aren't For Kids!

Pullips Aren't For Kids!

I have seen to many pullips get broken by children, I don't think that kids should own them. I think that you should be AT LEAST 13 to have a pullip, the back of the box says 15+, but I think thirteen is a resonable age too. But pullips aren't for children, they are not a toy after all, and are not meant to be played with, and what do children do with their toys? They tend to play with them. A friend of mine said she saw a little girl, about two, pushing a pullip in a stroller in walmart..it made me sick hearing about it, some people say that little pullips work for kids, but I know a nine year old that has a little Raphia, I feel so sorry for that doll..she throws her on the floor...sigh..If you are under this age a recommend angel pullips and dals, as they ARE for kids. To sum it all up, I don't recommend pullips for kids, as most pullip collectors agree, and I think the parents who buy such expensive dolls for their little sweethearts are idiots. If you agree comment and add this as a favorite.

Gaming Rig - 09.04.2006

Gaming Rig - 09.04.2006

My home office/gaming rig as of September 4, 2006.

My long term goal is to be able to run my Mac mini to the HDTV and control OS X through a remote (Remote Buddy) or preferrably a PS3 controller. I'd love to be able to watch any Movie in my library (thank you, Handbrake) or launch an Emulator to play any game in my 100% complete 13GB Rom collection (NES, SNES, Genesis, SMS, GG, PCE, Lynx, Jaguar, 2600) with a single input device.

I can dream, can't I?

Eventually, all of this stuff will get moved into the basement (when we get it finished off) so that I can have room for my Arcade Cabinet. Right now it's tucked in the corner off to the right in this photo.

I also plan on:

- upgrading the TV to a 37+ incher (LCD)
- adding in my Sony 5.1 surround receiver and my Yamaha powered sub
- removing the TV stand and using built in wall cabinetry
- showcasing my massive console/game collection somehow
